Development and improvement of lead acid battery recycling technology

Lead acid battery is globally highest in production value in all kinds of secondary batteries. With the rising of battery manufacturing quantity, recycling of lead acid battery is an important issue economically and environmentally. The percentage of lead-containing component in lead acid battery is more than 70%, however, domestical recycling rate is still not high enough compared to international leading technology. Low recycling rate of lead also cause high lead concentration and large volume of slag. Low melting and reduction temperature is one of the most important reasons to low recycling rate. The premise of high temperature process is suitable refractory material, which is critical to decrease the reaction between slag and furnace lining and increase the lifetime of refractory material. In this project, analysis of typical commercialized refractory material and technology development of new refractory material were carried out. The introduction of new refractory material into the furnance provide better protection and lifetime, and also the possibility of high temperatue operation. Recycling rate of lead component is raising from 65.6% to between 68% and 70%. Lead concentration in slag is improved and reduced to about 60-90%, as the slag rate is also decreased to 19%-30%. The increase of recycling rate and the reduction of lead slag and concentration are beneficial to lead industry economically and environmentally.
